When Jesus was asked – who is my neighbor – he told the story of the Good Samaritan. The victimized and existentially threatened, in that moment, needed compassion and mercy. Sadly, and instructively, those who chose not to help revealed how narrowly they defined ‘my neighbor’.
Unity is only possible with a common reality. Many are expressing a sense of nostalgia for what happened 19 years ago that brought our nation, and many parts of the world, together in grief and resolve. But it was a common reality that made it possible.
